Safety & Security
Safety and security are our absolute priority at SAR.
Please follow our top tips:
Knowing what’s allowed and what’s not allowed before you arrive at the station – as well as giving yourself plenty of time to follow the security procedures, will save your time and inconvenience and make your journey with SAR more enjoyable.

ID Card
Have your ticket and ID ready before you approach the security check point.
Electronic Items
Take your laptop, iPad, Kindle and any other similar, large electrical items out of your hand baggage to be x-rayed separately.
Apparel
Remove coats, jackets and belts. They will need to be x-rayed along with your bag.
Remove Shoes
Be prepared to remove your shoes before going through the security archway.
Items Prohibited in Checked-in Baggage
Checked-in baggage is the term we use for luggage that is checked-in and placed in our luggage coach for the duration of your journey. There are several items that you are allowed to carry in checked-in baggage that you are not allowed to carry on-board with you in your hand baggage. Items that you can have in your checked-in baggage but not in your hand baggage include:

Scissors
Sharp items including scissors
Razor blades
Razors that have the blade set into plastic molds are allowed in hand baggage, but other types are not
Knives
Knives with blades of any length.
Hypodermic needles
Unless required for medical reasons, for which proof will be required
Tools
Including multi-tools and pen knives
Catapults
Walking/hiking poles
Sports Items
Sporting bats, darts, billiard, snooker or pool cues.
Hand baggage
Hand baggage is the term we use for the luggage that you carry through security and keep with you during your journey.
Our Security Check-Point closes promptly 5 minutes before the train departure, and we recommend that customers pass through this point at least 15 minutes prior, having enough time to clear the security checks, enter the platform and board the train.
Customers travelling with a pacemaker or ICD should inform security staff before passing through the walk-through metal detector at the Security Check-Point, as this may set off the metal detector alarm. Please produce your pacemaker / ICD identification card when doing so.
Smoking materials
Cigarettes, e-cigarettes and other tobacco products are all allowed in hand baggage.
You cannot carry any lighters or matches on board. You will be asked to leave any lighters at the security check-point.
Please note smoking of cigarettes and e-cigarettes are not permitted inside the station building or onboard SAR trains at any time.
Prohibited Items
There are some items that you’re not allowed to take on our trains in either your hand baggage or your checked-in baggage. This is not an exhaustive list, and anything that’s inherently dangerous or that could be used to commit an act of violence or threat will not be permitted for travelling with SAR:
